Heriot Bridge, West Otago

Date: May 2012 and March 2013

Client: Clutha District Council

Engineer: MWH New Zealand Ltd

Main Contractor: Fulton Hogan/Southroads

Located on a rural road near the town of Heriot in West Otago the single span concrete bridge required the application of two layers Sikawrap 930G unidirectional glass fibre fabric to each of the two main concrete beams supporting the deck.

Each beam was 615mm deep and 315mm wide x 13LM. The FRP was applied vertically around the beam terminating at the underside of the deck.

Initially engaged by network maintenance contractor Fulton Hogan in May 2012 the application temperatures were too cold to meet Sika’s application criteria and only the substrate preparation work was completed in the 2011/2012 financial year. The network contract was subsequently re-tendered and awarded to Southroads who engaged BBR Contech to complete the works in warmer temperatures in early 2013.

The FRP was subsequently protected with two coats Sikagard 550 Elastic for UV and atmospheric protection.
